What is Surround OS?

Surround OS is a virtual reality workspace that allows you to do all of your favorite personal computing activities - such as browsing the web, writing email, and listening to music - all within virtual reality

To use Surround OS, you need:

A virtual reality headset, such as Oculus Rift

A VR-ready computer

A regular keyboard and mouse

To control Surround OS:

use your mouse and keyboard to launch and manipulate apps, which appear as windows around you

Ever have a million things open and have to switch windows multiple times to find what you're looking for?

Having your apps around you in 360° space allows you to see more information at once, saving you time and reducing headache.

Sometimes you want to hang out and have fun. But other times, you just want to concentrate on the task at hand.

Working in virtual reality blocks distractions from the outside world, helping you get immersed into whatever you're doing.

About me

Joshua Lykes

Creator, Surround OS

I’ve been passionate about both art and technology for as long as I can remember. Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been into drawing and painting (see some of my work here). A more recent interest of mine has been software development: while I was completing an MBA at Stanford, I took 9 different courses in their computer science department, with a focus on computer graphics and virtual reality.

I’ve been extremely excited about virtual reality since the first time I tried it in 2014. I believe that the technology will enable many types of compelling experiences that were not possible before. I hope to use what I’ve learned through studying art, technology, and business to help enable some of these experiences!

To learn more about my background, check out my LinkedIn profile. And if you’d like to get in touch with me, you can find my contact information at the end of this page. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, so I would love to hear from you especially if you are nearby.
